Centrelink should be run like a business

Which means, in a nutshell.. if they continue to operate as they have in the past, they will be forced to file for bankruptcy and go out of business or be taken over by new management.

Centre-flunk is an interesting website with hundreds of stories, anecdotes, links to news reports and discussion forums that tear into Centrelink.

Some of the rhetoric is a bit over the top, and I'm not sure how valid some of their complaints are.
I certainly don't agree with their calls to increase Centrelink's funding as a solution.

But this is what you get with government ownership of an entity. Is there a private business in operation today that has as many complaints ?

  1. Hey there Jono...

As an Administrator at centreflunk, I just have to ask this : can you quote anywhere at all that we have called for INCREASED funding to Centrelink ? I have spent 2 hours trying to find whatever you looked at .. but no success.
I've seen where we've called for increased funding of pensions, etc...I see where we've called for criminal charges to be brought on certain Centrelink staff who break rules daily with no accountability.
I'm not doubting you : I'm just interested to see WHO posted something like that ? We have had MANY Centrelink " imposters " join our membership and attempt to create disunity, but we usually find them out pretty quickly and ban them. As with ANY website, there will always be the " lunatic fringe " who will rave on about nonsensical stuff : but we usually treat them accordingly. Centreflunk is, however, a public forum, and we pride ourselves on presenting ALL views, however weird they may be.

  2. Alright I'll concede that you didn't call for increased funding specifically. I may have read a post by someone that hinted at it, but I'll let you off the hook.

  3. Centrelink IS run like a business.

After all, it is a business. Take a look at the Business Plan which is available for download on their website:

    http://www.centrelink.com.au/internet/internet.nsf/publications/co055.htm

Running a business means reducing costs while making bigger profits. Why do you think there is such a serious pressing to raise further debts against Centrelink "customers" to make savings for Centrelink investors?

The Centrelink Annual report states this clearly: "Debt Recovery: In 2006-2007, Centrelink met its target for debt recovery and recovered $1235 million in customer debts. This compared with $1221 million in 2005-06."

Which means, in a nutshell.. they will continue to run as a business, save on "running costs", reap huge profits, and most importantly, continue to plunge the unfortunate into large debts...

... NOT go bankrupt. They'll never go bankrupt.

2,168,019 debts were raised in 2006-07 according the Centrelink Annual Report. That's a nice percentage of people on benefits.
